NATO Secretary General Holds Talks with Ukrainian President in Brussels to Increase Support
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte hosted Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Brussels on Wednesday for high-level talks on increasing military support for Ukraine and boosting the country’s economy.
Ahead of the meeting, Rutte told reporters that the issue of increasing Ukraine’s defense capabilities and strengthening its economy in order to prepare for the post-war period would be discussed during the bilateral meeting and the meeting of delegations.
He noted that some European allies would also attend the meeting later.
Ensuring that Ukraine is in the strongest possible position when it comes time for peace negotiations is at the top of the agenda for NATO leaders, he added.
Rutte continued, “Air defense systems and arms assistance to Ukraine should be increased”.
He touched on the importance of delivering 19 air defense systems to protect the country’s vital infrastructure.
Earlier, Zelensky said he would talk about security guarantees for his country either at the EU leaders’ summit he will attend on Thursday or at a meeting on Wednesday evening.
He pointed out that it’s important for Europe to have a political solution and a common position.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, EU Council President Antonio Costa, as well as the leaders of Germany, Poland, Italy and Denmark, are expected to attend the meeting on Wednesday evening.
