Bernie Sanders: America is complicit in all the atrocities Israel committed in Gaza
Left-wing members of the US Senate, accusing President Joe Biden’s administration of complicity in committing atrocities in the Gaza Strip, failed during a vote on Wednesday to block an arms sale deal to Israel.
The initiative was launched by independent Senator Bernie Sanders, who in a speech he delivered in the Senate denounced the “all-out war being waged by the extremist government” led by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu “against the Palestinian people”.
The leftist senator stressed that there are millions of people in Gaza suffering from extreme poverty, who have been expelled from their homes and thousands of children who are suffering today from famine and malnutrition.
Sanders stressed that “the United States is complicit in all of these atrocities, we are funding these atrocities, and this complicity must end”.
A series of proposals to prevent the Pentagon from sending a new $20 billion arms package to Israel were voted on Wednesday.
All of those proposals fell to the vote, as a large number of senators showed steadfast support for Israel, a historical ally of the United States.
Powerful Republican Senator Mitch McConnell defended the arms deal.
McConnell said that obstructing this deal will only strengthen and embolden terrorist groups like Hamas and Hezbollah.
In his speech on Wednesday, Sanders took direct aim at some of his colleagues.
“Many of you come here to talk about human rights and what is happening in the world, but I want to tell you that no one will take you seriously anymore,” he said.
“They will say, you are worried about China, Russia and Iran. Why are you funding the starvation of children in Gaza?” he added.
