A German citizen accused of sabotage at energy facilities in Russia has been arrested in the Kaliningrad region, national news agencies reported, citing the Russian Security Service.

Nikolai Gayduk, a German citizen born in 1967, was involved in the explosion in March 2024 at a gas distribution station in Kaliningrad, the Russian security authorities said in a statement, noting that he had returned to Russia from Poland to organize sabotage at local energy facilities.

Last October, Russia summoned the German ambassador to Moscow to protest the opening of a new NATO base in the Baltic Sea, the stated aim of which is to coordinate the efforts of member states in the region against Russia.

Russia considered this move a violation of the 1990 Moscow Treaty, which defines the international status of Germany after its reunification and prohibits the stationing and deployment of foreign forces on the territory of the former German Democratic Republic.

Last September, amid ongoing tensions between Russia and the West since the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Germany renewed its accusations against Moscow of launching cyber-attacks in European countries.
