Polish President Andrzej Duda said a call by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz with Russian President Vladimir Putin was aimed at achieving a ceasefire in Ukraine before Donald Trump takes office.

Scholz has come under fire for his attempts to revive relations with Moscow amid a political crisis in his ruling coalition. Although Scholz insisted during the G20 summit that his conversation with Putin was aimed at negotiating a ceasefire with Kiev.

Duda, a close associate of Trump, cast doubt on the claims, saying Scholz had something else in mind.

Duda suggested in an interview in Warsaw that Scholz wanted to exclude Trump from the talks, saying, “I think it was an attempt to establish a ceasefire in Ukraine before Donald Trump takes office”.

Duda noted that Scholz is worried that Trump will force him to buy gas from Washington, a deal he doesn’t want, so he is trying to circumvent it before the Republican leader takes office.

In this context, Scholz commented on Duda’s statements by saying that Germany has “made itself independent” of Russian gas and isn’t ready to give that up.

Duda also criticized Scholz’s invitation to US President Joe Biden to hold talks on Ukraine’s future with the leaders of France and the United Kingdom last month in Berlin.

The Polish President said that he was “shocked” that Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky wasn’t given a seat at the table.

Despite Trump’s clear statements indicating a reduction in aid to Ukraine, Duda says Trump, “won’t abandon Ukraine,” and that he hasn’t defined his war plan, and is still gathering information.
