German forces have officially completed their withdrawal from Niger, in accordance with a previous agreement between the two countries’ authorities, according to what was announced by the commander of the Niger land forces and a German officer during a ceremony held on the occasion.

“The withdrawal of German troops and equipment from Niger has ended today, August 30,” said General Mamman Sani Kyaw, commander of the Niger ground forces, while reading a statement he signed on Friday with German Army Colonel Karsten Strauss, and the German forces’ position at Air Base 101 in Niamey has been closed.

The Niger military official explained that 5 cargo planes returned 60 members of the German armed forces to Germany, in addition to 146 tons of equipment.

General Kyaw confirmed that the operation was carried out safely thanks to coordination between the Niger and German armed forces, stressing that this withdrawal does not mean the end of military cooperation between the two parties, and that they will maintain their relations in this area.

On July 6, Germany announced that it had stopped using its airlift base in Niger, pledging to complete the withdrawal of its nearly 100 soldiers by August 31.

US forces are expected to complete their withdrawal from Niger by mid-September, and before that, France had withdrawn its forces from the country at the end of 2023.
