EU extends sanctions on Syria for another year
The European Council extended the EU’s restrictive measures against the Syrian government until the beginning of June 2025, due to the worsening situation in Syria.
These current restrictive measures include 316 individuals and 86 entities, who are subject to asset freezes and EU citizens and companies are prohibited from providing them with funds.
In a statement published by the Council on its official website, the application of the humanitarian exemption provided in February 2023 was extended, due to the seriousness of the humanitarian crisis in Syria, which was exacerbated by the earthquake that struck Turkey and Syria.
The statement stressed that this resolution aims to ensure the continuation of the provision of humanitarian assistance and activities that support basic humanitarian needs in a timely manner.
The Council expressed its deep concern about the situation in Syria, noting that the conflict that has lasted for more than 13 years continues to be a source of suffering and instability for the Syrian people and the region.
