A US Veto thwarts a draft resolution by the UAE calling for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip
The United States used its Veto power against a draft resolution demanding a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, which led to the failure of the UN Security Council to pass the resolution.
The draft resolution calls for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip for humanitarian reasons, and the draft also stresses the need for the immediate and unconditional release of all detainees and to ensure the arrival of humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip.
The final results of the voting process on the resolution were, 13 countries voted in favor of the resolution, except for Britain, which abstained from voting, and the United States, which used its veto power against the resolution.
Deputy US delegate to the Security Council, Robert Wood, said that the United States used its Veto against the draft resolution because it doesn’t condemn the Hamas movement and doesn’t affirm Israel’s right to defend itself.
Russian Deputy Representative to the United Nations, Dmitry Polyansky, stated that the United States prohibits the Security Council from intervening to resolve the crisis in Gaza, and the results of this diplomacy are a graveyard for Palestinian children in Gaza.
He added, “By obstructing reaching a ceasefire, the United States condemned tens of thousands of civilians in Palestine to death before our eyes, and American diplomacy left behind a scorched earth and destruction”.
Russian Deputy Representative to the United Nations, stressed that “history won’t forgive these actions of Washington”.
