It seems that the competition between the Turkish government and the opposition has begun to intensify with the approaching date of the presidential elections, to be held in mid-2023, in elections that both parties see as crucial to determining the future shape of Türkiye, a hundred years after the founding of the republic.

Normalization of the relations between Türkiye and Syria appears clearly in the competition between the two parties, as Turkish officials continue to express their desire to meet with the Syrian president for reconcile, while the Turkish opposition works to obstruct any rapprochement between the “Justice and Development” government and President Assad, in order to preserve the Syrian refugees topic in their hand.

The Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan revealed a few days ago an offer he made to his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin to hold a tripartite meeting between Türkiye, Russia and Syria, preceded by the intelligence agencies, then the defense ministers and then the foreign ministers of the three countries, which was welcomed by Moscow, a close ally of Syrian President Bashar al Assad.

However, it seems that the Turkish opposition is taking steps against the government’s efforts.

A letter sent by the largest Turkish opposition party, the Republican People’s Party, to the Syrian President, with the aim of obstructing the path of normalization between Ankara and Damascus.

The letter includes promises or concessions made by the Turkish opposition party, including the payment of compensation to Syria from Türkiye, in addition to the withdrawal of Turkish forces from all Syrian lands.

The leaked letter stated that the government of the Republican People’s Party would meet all the demands of the Syrian president, including compensations, and all Turkish forces would withdraw from Syrian territories.

The six-party opposition table is the stakeholder in obstructing Erdogan and Assad’s meeting, stressing that the opposition sent 7 requests to meet Assad in the past five months, in addition to other requests from outside the table.

The Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, according to which Hassan Akgul and Muhammad Gozal Mansour of the Republican People’s Party sent a letter to Assad through the Syrian ruling Baath Party.

The letter read: “Erdogan’s days are numbered… Any meeting can affect the future of the election.

Under our rule, all demands of the Syrian government, including compensation, will be met”.

The letter continues, “We pledge to withdraw all forces from Syrian territory, including Idlib”.

On the other hand, Ankara looks with concern towards the Kurdish People’s Protection Units in northern Syria, and expresses its dissatisfaction with the failure of the United States and Russia to abide by their commitments regarding the removal of the Kurdish organization from the Turkish border to a depth of 30 km, amid dissatisfaction with Washington’s continued support for it, with the aim of forming an autonomous entity on the southern border with Türkiye.
