Due to Fearing of gas shortage… Germany intends to reduce the heating of buildings in winter to 19 degrees

German Economy Minister Robert Habeck said that his country intends to implement additional measures to save energy in the coming winter, for fear of a shortage of gas supplies.

According to the Deutsche Welle, Habeck added in an interview with the Süddeutsche Zeitung newspaper, that “the temperature shouldn’t exceed 19 degrees in public buildings, except of course in hospitals and social centers”.

He stressed that “the lighting of buildings and archaeological sites at night will also be prohibited, a measure that some cities, such as Berlin, have begun to implement”.

He also indicated that “it is also necessary to reduce energy consumption in the workplace,” noting that this issue is currently under discussion.

Germany is experiencing an escalating energy crisis due to rising global prices, which were recently exacerbated by uncertainty over gas supplies from Russia.

The federal government has also prepared a plan to rationalize gas, should things go wrong.

German officials at all levels are urging citizens to conserve energy in various ways, such as taking shorter showers and not using air conditioners.

European Union countries have unleashed a slew of anti-Russian sanctions in retaliation for its military operation in Ukraine and announced their intention to completely abandon Russian energy sources.

While Moscow responded that Europe bears responsibility for the damage suffered by its economy as a result.
