The information that revealed the existence of three US military bases in Libya has raised reactions and questions about the role played by these military bases, whether the Libyan reconciliation government is aware of this, or whether the information is surprising to them, as well as Libyan General Khalifa Hafater.

The Us website “The Intercept” has revealed the existence of three military sites of the African General Command in Africa, “Afrikom” in Libya, one of three African countries, pointing to the fact that they obtained documents that prove the existence of large network of US military bases in three African countries, which are: Niger, Somalia and Libya.

The website pointed out that there are 34 “Afrikom” military bases in Africa, including 14 operational bases, 20 backup sites and a cooperative security site, according to the documents obtained by the website.

Since last March, “Afrikom” forces have carried out several air strikes inside Libya, which it said were aimed at Islamic state fighters and Al Qaeda there.

The latest was a raid in the south of the country that resulted in the killing of 11 people amid anger from Tuareg tribes.

Were civilians and had nothing to do with al Qaeda or the organization of the Islamic state, they say.

For his part, the former Libyan defense minister, Mohamed Barghouthi said that, according to his knowledge there are no foreign bases in Libya so far, it is true that the United States in 2012 established a training center for special forces in Kilo 27 west of the capital Tripoli, but the troops there left with the closure of embassies in Tripoli.

The former Libyan minister said that “the report information mentioned by the American site is inaccurate, and the locations of these alleged bases should be mentioned.

As for the presence of foreign forces, French forces were present for a limited period at the airport in the south of Benghazi.

They worked as technicians to introduce advanced equipment, He said.

He continued: “In the southern Libya, Chadian forces were opposed to the rule of President Idriss Deby resorted to Libya, but withdrew after the warning.

“He does not know how true this report is, but the fixed military bases need permission from the US Congress to establish it and so it is always announced”, said Libyan political analyst Muhammad Buysir.

On the exploitation of this matter in the liquidation of accounts, he explained: “Of course, the auctions exist from everyone, and the fact that the presence of foreign forces in Libya by many countries is a reality, and America the least of these countries are present.

There are Chadians and Emiratis, Egyptians, Italians, French and Russians”.

The Libyan journalist Abdullah Al Kabir said that “the Al Wefaq government in Libya and General Haftar’s forces are aware of this military activity.

The Americans are not working without local cooperation, as the United Nations experts report pointed to the landing of cargo planes tracking the US Army at some Libyan airports”.

“Therefore, it will not be surprising that “Afrikom” has an extensive military activity in Libya to hunt down extremist elements affiliated with Al Qaeda or the organization of the Islamic state and this activity is incompatible with the US strategy announced by US President Donald Trump to limit the US role in Libya to the pursuit of terrorist groups”.

“The fact that there are secret US bases in Libya is not surprising, as in all of Africa, because the institutions in Washington, especially the Pentagon, and the CIA are working on the ground in secret in countries that they see as a threat to US interests”, said Sudanese political analyst Abbas Mohammed Saleh.

“In some cases, such as Libya, where there is no political stability and effective central institutions, the United States runs its own affairs according to its interests and only regardless of whether the central government agrees”, he said.
