What’s behind the shocking resignation of the Israeli Army Ground Forces Commander?

On Tuesday, Israeli media revealed that the commander of the Israeli army’s ground forces, Major General Tamir Yadai, had resigned from his position, in a move described by the Walla website as “an earthquake in the General Staff”.

According to the Times of Israel, Major General Yadai submitted his resignation for personal reasons, and Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi and Defense Minister Yoav Galant approved his request.

The Israeli army announced that Yadai will be on temporary leave during the current period, and his resignation will be officially submitted after a replacement is appointed.

In a related context, Yadai was a potential candidate for the position of Deputy Chief of Staff, but expectations indicate that the current deputy, General Amir Baram, won’t end his position anytime soon.

Therefore, the Chief of Staff must appoint a new commander of the Ground Forces, and Major General Uri Gordin, the commander of the Northern Command, is considered a leading candidate for the position, which enhances his chances in the future to assume the position of Deputy Chief of Staff.

Walla website indicated that there is harsh criticism of General Gordin’s behavior in the recent period, especially in the context of the escalation with Hezbollah.

During the past months, the Israeli media expected new resignations in the army under the pressure of the failure on October 7.

Last June, the commander of the Gaza Division, Brigadier General Avi Rosenfeld, resigned, and last April, the head of the Military Intelligence Division (Aman), Aharon Haliva, resigned.

In contrast, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu rejects the accusations against him for the consequences of the failure, and insists on continuing in his position despite the increasing pressure to hold early elections.
