What does Syria need to get out of the humanitarian crisis after 10 years of war?
Red Cross and Red Crescent officials stated that ten years after the outbreak of the Syrian conflict, families are finding it more difficult than ever to buy food while ambulances lack fuel to transport the injured and “Covid-19” patients to hospitals.
“Syria is in the midst of a deadly cycle of war, economic downturn, pandemic and sanctions,” ICRC President Peter Maurer told a news conference.
“Nearly three quarters of the population now needs help, an increase of 20 percent compared to what was the case 12 months ago,” he added.
United Nations figures show that 13.4 million of Syria’s population, which currently numbers about 18 million, depend on aid.
In this context, political analyst Dr. Alaa Al-Asfari said:
“The unjust siege practiced by the United States of America and the west on Syria targets the Syrian people, not only the Syrian state.
The Syrian people are now subjected to the most difficult siege that has passed through history and there are many pressures due to the economic, financial and humanitarian blockade.
A great US economist on Lebanon and everyone knows that Lebanon is the outlet for the Syrian economy.
The pressure on Syria and Lebanon, the US occupation and its seizure of oil and wheat in the northeastern Euphrates caused a major fuel crisis.
He added that there is an exaggeration in the number of 13 million Syrians who depend on humanitarian aid, but more than a third of the Syrian people depend on foreign and humanitarian aid.
For her part, World Food Program media officer Reem Nada said: “There are many needs in Syria, there is a report issued two weeks ago by the World Food Program that Syria needs foodstuffs that reach more than 12 million Syrians, in addition to that there are 16 million Syrians who need humanitarian aid in general, and therefore Syrian families who suffer from powerlessness.
The provision of food for children and the elderly has reached 60%, and the most vulnerable in Syria are the displaced people, there are cases of displacement in Syria, about more than 6 million displaced Syrians, as there are Syrian families who have been forced to flee three times, which makes it difficult for them to have a normal livelihood.
They depend heavily on humanitarian aid because they do not live in their main areas.
Nada added that there is a very large increase in the prices of foodstuffs, reaching more than three times their price, and the lack of funds for Syrian families and poor production was the cause of this economic crisis and the rise in food prices.
She added, “Soon, an urgent appeal will be issued by organizations operating in Syria in late March to provide for the humanitarian needs of Syria, and an appeal to donor countries, but at the moment there is a lack of funding that reaches more than 350 million dollars in the next six months only and the World Food Program that provides food For about 5 million Syrians inside Syria, nearly $ 100 million is spent every month to provide food in Syria, so the humanitarian needs of donor countries are very large.
