Washington warns of serious negative consequences if Romania turns away from the West
The United States warned Wednesday of serious negative consequences if Romania turns away from the West, a position that comes days before the second round of presidential elections scheduled for Sunday between a far-right candidate and a centrist mayor.
“Romania’s hard-won progress in establishing its place in the transatlantic community cannot be undermined by foreign actors seeking to distance Romania’s foreign policy from its Western alliances,” State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said in a statement, referring to Bucharest’s accusations that Moscow interfered in its elections.
“Any such change would have serious negative implications for US security cooperation with Romania, while a decision to restrict foreign investment would discourage US companies from continuing to invest in Romania,” he added.
Miller stressed that the United States is concerned about an official report published by Bucharest accusing Moscow of interfering in the presidential elections in Romania.
“The data referred to in the report must be fully investigated to ensure the integrity of the electoral process in Romania,” he said.
