Washington explains that it has not imposed sanctions on the Saudi crown prince
The White House justified the United States ’refusal to impose sanctions against the Saudi Crown Prince, Prince Mohammed bin Salman, over the” Khashoggi case”.
In statements to CNN on Sunday, the spokeswoman for the US administration, Jane Psaki, in response to a question about the reason for not imposing sanctions against the person behind the assassination of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, according to US intelligence: “Throughout history, and even during his modern era, I have refrained.
Democratic and republican administrations for imposing sanctions against leaders of foreign governments that have diplomatic relations with us, even in the absence of diplomatic relations between us.
“We believe that there are more effective methods to prevent this recurrence in the future, as well as to pave the way for working with the Saudis in areas where there is harmony and where there are national interests of the United States,” she added.
This is the face of diplomacy”.
And she went on: “This is the image of any complex participation in world affairs, and we never feared, but we were absolutely clear that we would hold them (Saudi rulers) accountable at the global level and with direct actions,” describing Khashoggi’s assassination as a “horrific crime”.
Jamal Khashoggi, known for his articles criticizing Riyadh’s policy, disappeared on October 2, 2018, after entering the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul. On October 20, the Saudi authorities reported that the journalist was killed inside the building.
The international community condemned the crime and called on Riyadh to conduct a transparent investigation into its causes.
On November 15 of the same year, the Saudi authorities published the preliminary results of the investigation, which stated that there were initially plans to transfer the journalist to Riyadh, not to kill him.
And earlier on Sunday, a White House official played down the importance of US President Joe Biden’s upcoming announcement on Monday regarding Saudi Arabia, saying that his administration would not take major measures.
Biden said on Saturday that his administration would make an announcement on Monday about Saudi Arabia, following the CIA report that concluded that Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman had agreed to kill journalist Jamal Khashoggi.
