Washington announces its withdrawal from the Human Rights Council on charges of bias against Israel and accuses the international body of “a quagmire of political prejudices”!!!

The United States withdrew on Tuesday from the UN Human Rights Council, which accused it of «hypocrisy» and «bias» against Israel.

US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley flew to Washington to announce with Foreign Minister Mike Pompeo the decision.

Pompeo and Haley said the United States would remain at the head of human rights defenders, but for many, the resolution reflects President Donald Trump’s hostility to the United Nations and multilateralism in diplomatic work in general.

The decision came after the Human Rights Council criticized Washington for dismissing minor children of illegal immigrants from relatives looking for asylum after entering the country from Mexico.

However Haley and Pompeo confirmed that the decision was made after a year of efforts to push the council to reform and exclude member states that commit abuses.

«We need these reforms to make the council a serious lawyer defending human rights», Hailey said.

«For a long time, the Human Rights Council was a protector of perpetrators of human rights abuses and a sign of political bias», she said.

«Unfortunately, it is now clear that our call for reform has not been heard», she said.

The UN body, based in Geneva, was established in 2006 to promote and protect human rights in the world.

But its declarations and decisions often conflicted with US priorities.

Washington has been particularly unhappy about the council’s condemnation of Israeli practices toward Palestinians in the territories occupied by the Jewish state in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

But Hailey said the Human Rights Council had been limited to criticizing flagrant human rights abuses by anti-US states such as Venezuela and Cuba.

«The states have colluded with each other to undermine the current method of selecting members», Pompeo said.

«The council’s continued and well-documented bias against Israel has crossed the border», he said.

«Since its establishment, the Council has adopted a number of resolutions condemning Israel that are superior to those of the world’s nations», he said.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a statement that «the Council has proved for many years that it is a biased, hostile and anti-Israel that betrays its mission of defending human rights».

«Instead of focusing on systems that systematically violate human rights, the council is obsessed with Israel, the only real democratic state in the Middle East», he said.

«The decision of the United States to withdraw from this biased organization is an unequivocal statement that there is a rift».

Hayley warned a year ago that Washington could withdraw from the council if reforms were not carried out.

«We are taking this step because our commitment does not allow us to remain members of a hypocritical organization and serve their own interests and turn human rights into a mockery», Haley said.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterich expressed his regret over the US decision.

In a statement Guterich said, «The structure of the UN Human Rights Council plays a very important role in the promotion and protection of human rights around the world».

The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Raad Al Hussein on Monday criticized Trump’s immigration policy, by saying that «We believe that any country’s attempt to deter people by harming children in this way is unacceptable».

The Human Rights Watch criticized the US move, when its Director Kenneth Roth said that, «The withdrawal of the administration of President Donald».

«Trump is a regrettable reflection of the one-dimensional policy on human rights», he said.

«It defends Israeli violations in the face of criticism above all».

Roth continue adding that «The UN Human Rights Council has played an important role in countries like North Korea, Syria, Burma and southern Sudan, but it seems that all that matters to Trump is to defend Israel».

The United States has consistently criticized the Council for including Israel’s practices in the Palestinian territories on the agenda of all its three annual sessions, making the only Hebrew state to which a fixed agenda item is defined as item VII.

The United States refused to join the council when it was formed in 2006 under former President George W. Bush when John Bolton, national security adviser to President Trump and skeptic about the viability of the United Nations, was US ambassador to the United Nations.

Washington joined the council only in 2009 after Barrack Obama came to power in the White House.

Since Trump took office, the United States has withdrawn from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), reduced its contribution to the UN budget and has also withdrawn from the Paris-sponsored climate agreement.

All these US administration moves shows without a shadow of a doubt the true stand of the United States towards the events of the world.
