Wall Street Journal: Washington informed Tehran that the strikes were a one-time action!
The Wall Street Journal reported on Sunday, citing US officials, that Washington informed Tehran that the strikes targeting nuclear facilities in Iran were a “one-time action” and not the beginning of a war aimed at regime change.
The WSJ reported that the timing of the US strikes on Iran was intended to “create an unexpected situation” before the deadline Washington had previously announced for a decision on action.
Citing sources and senior officials in the administration of former US President Donald Trump, the WSJ reported that Washington had stated on June 19 that it would make a decision within two weeks regarding a response to Iran, but the attack was carried out today, in a surprise attack, against three nuclear facilities: Fordo, Natanz, and Isfahan.
According to sources, Trump approved the military plans on June 17 during a meeting in the Situation Room, but didn’t announce his final decision pending an assessment of Tehran’s response to the pressure.
The sources added that Trump held a private meeting in New Jersey on Saturday, during which he gave direct orders to carry out the attack within hours, a move seen as deliberate, creating an unexpected surprise.
Officials confirmed that the US administration informed Tehran that the strikes were a “one-time action” and not the beginning of a war aimed at regime change.
The WSJ reported that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu informed Trump, during a phone call on June 9, of Tel Aviv’s intention to launch an attack on Iran.
According to the information, Trump asked to “give diplomacy another chance,” before the two sides held a new call three days later, during which Netanyahu confirmed that “Israel is determined to carry out the strikes as soon as possible”.
The WSJ quoted sources as saying that Trump told Netanyahu at the time that Washington wouldn’t obstruct the process, but wouldn’t support it either”.
Following the strikes, Trump called Netanyahu, who expressed “great gratitude” for the US action.
