The incident occurred during an informal gathering in Germany amid the G7 summit in June 2022, where the low-level meeting was scheduled to discuss the situation of Ukraine.

In an unexpected move, US President Joe Biden canceled a scheduled meeting early one evening with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz because he had to go to bed, a decision that surprised attendees.

According to a report in the Wall Street Journal, Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced at the last minute that Biden wouldn’t attend because he needed to rest, surprising the German chancellor and his aides who were expecting the US president to attend.

The incident occurred during an informal gathering in Germany amid the G7 summit in June 2022, where the low-level meeting was scheduled to discuss the situation of Ukraine.

The US State Department denied the report, noting that the White House had informed participants in advance that Biden wouldn’t be able to attend.

However, sources close to the president told Axios that Biden works better during daylight hours between 10 am and 4 pm and finds it difficult to work outside of that time frame.

The incident comes at a time when Biden is facing growing criticism over his ability to manage his presidential duties, especially after a controversial debate against Donald Trump punctuated by verbal errors and confusing statements.

These mistakes have been criticized by prominent Democratic Party donors, such as Abigail Disney, which announced a halt to donations to the party until a replacement for Biden is offered.

As the NATO summit approaches, Biden faces a crucial challenge in demonstrating his ability to handle complex international affairs.

Biden is expected to host coalition leaders in Washington for three days of public discussions and activities, which will conclude with a solo press conference on the afternoon of July 11.

Under these circumstances, the NATO summit is seen as a critical test of Biden’s sharpness of mind and ability to lead the country amid ongoing international challenges.

As the White House continues to downplay Biden’s daily schedule to protect him from surprise meetings, the bigger question remains whether Biden will be able to continue to perform efficiently until the end of his presidency.
