Türkiye: The location and the possible date of the meeting between Erdogan and Assad
According to Türkiye newspaper, there is a possibility of the first meeting between Syrian President Bashar al Assad and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in August.
According to Turkish government sources quoted by the newspaper, the first meeting in more than a decade between the two presidents could take place at a border checkpoint.
The sources pointed out that the meeting may take place at any time, and the first option for the meeting between Erdogan and Assad was Iraq, but Ankara now prefers that the meeting take place at the Kasab/Yeladagi checkpoint on the Turkish-Syrian border.
The procedures are moving very quickly, and there is a high probability that a joint image of the two leaders will emerge in August.
The intelligence services of the two countries held at least three meetings in July as part of efforts to normalize relations.
Earlier, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan announced that he was working on a meeting between Erdogan and Assad, but noted that talking about anything concrete was still early.
For his part, Russian President Dmitry Peskov’s press secretary stated that Russia is interested, like other countries, in improving relations between Türkiye and Syria.
