Türkiye newspaper: A US agreement with PKK that could change the balance of power in Syria
A group of fighters from the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), which is classified as terrorist organization in Türkiye, will withdraw from Syria under an agreement reached with the United States.
As the Pentagon prepares to withdraw from Syria, an agreement was reached during a meeting between the United States and the US-backed Kurdistan Workers’ Party/Democratic Union Party (PYD) for about 10,000 fighters to leave Syria, with permission to transport heavy weapons to Iraq, according to Türkiye newspaper.
In this context, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan had previously indicated in statements that Ankara is ready to deal with any developments that may result from the US withdrawal from Syria.
It’s noteworthy that the armed conflict between Türkiye and the Kurdistan Workers’ Party began in 1984, and resumed again in 2015.
The Kurdistan Workers’ Party bases are located in northern Iraq, where Turkish forces launch air and ground operations against their positions.
The Turkish military presence in the Zelikan camp, northeast of Mosul, is also a contentious issue between Baghdad and Ankara, with the latter justifying the presence of its forces by saying its necessary to combat the Kurdistan Workers’ Party.
