Türkiye intends to start negotiations with Syria to demarcate maritime borders in the Mediterranean and stresses that any future agreement will be in line with international law
Turkish Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Uraloğlu announced that his country intends to start negotiations with Syria to demarcate maritime borders in the Mediterranean.
Such a deal would allow the two countries to increase their sphere of influence in energy exploration, Uraloğlu told reporters in the capital Ankara.
The Turkish Minister of Transport explained that any future agreement would be in line with international law.
It’s worth noting that a similar maritime agreement was signed between Türkiye and Libya in 2019, which had led to an escalation of tensions between the government in Ankara and Greece, over energy exploration in the Mediterranean.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan stressed that the unity of Syrian territory is an unchanging principle for Türkiye and that it won’t back down from it, noting that visits by Turkish officials to Damascus will increase in the coming period.
Last Sunday, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said that he stressed to the commander of the military operations department in Syria, and the leader of Hay’at Tahrir al Sham, Ahmed al Sharaa, in Damascus, the necessity of the unity of Syrian territory and his country’s support for the Syrian people in the next phase.
