The Turkish Defense Ministry announced on Tuesday that Turkey has signed an agreement with Russia on establishing a joint center whose mission will be to monitor the ceasefire in the Nagorno Karabakh region.

“An agreement was signed after talks on technical arrangements for establishing a Turkish-Russian joint center and its operating principles,” the ministry wrote on Twitter.

“The necessary efforts have been made to make the center operational as soon as possible,” he added.

In mid-November, Ankara and Moscow signed a memorandum on establishing a joint monitoring center.

Turkey confirmed at the time that this center would be established in a place chosen by Azerbaijan.

In early November, Azerbaijan and Armenia signed an agreement sponsored by Russia that put an end to weeks of bloody confrontations in Nagorno Karabakh, the Azerbaijani separatist region with an Armenian majority.

To monitor respect for this agreement, which enshrines the field gains achieved by Baku and provides for the evacuation of Armenians in some areas, Moscow began deploying its “peace-keeping” forces.

In a proposal sent to the Turkish Parliament on November 16, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan requested approval to send soldiers to Azerbaijan with the aim of participating in the Russian-Turkish mission.
