Turkish Defense Ministry: We’re considering establishing a base in Syria at Damascus’ request
The Turkish Ministry of Defense reported on Thursday that its continuing to study establishing a base in Syria at Damascus’ request, with the aim of training the Syrian army in line with the requirements of the new government there.
In press statements in Ankara, the sources addressed the ministerial meeting held in Jordan on March 9, with the participation of the foreign ministers of Türkiye, Iraq, Syria, and Lebanon, along with the host country, to discuss the situation in Syria.
She stressed that the five countries agreed to support Syria in its war on terrorism, particularly the terrorist organization ISIS.
She said, “In line with the demands of the new Syrian government and in agreement with the concerned countries, a consensus was reached to establish a joint operations center”.
She added, “Preserving Syria’s territorial integrity, extending state authority by the new government throughout the country, and establishing stability and security are of great importance to Ankara… In this context, Türkiye continues to study establishing a training base in line with the new government’s requirements and to enhance the Syrian army’s capabilities”.
The sources stressed that all Turkish activities in Syria are coordinated in advance with relevant parties, and that all necessary security measures are taken.
