The Turkish army on Thursday sent new reinforcements to its checkpoints in the northwestern province of Idlib amid mounting tension in the region between Turkish and Syrian forces.

The official Anatolia news agency, citing military sources, said the reinforcements included vehicles, armored vehicles and ammunition from various parts of Turkey.

The dispatch comes on the back of the Turkish Ministry of Defense’s announcement on August 19 that a Turkish military convoy on its way to the Ninth Control Point south of Idlib was attacked by Syrian forces, killing three civilians and wounding 12 others.

Last Wednesday, the spokesman for the Turkish presidency, Ibrahim Kalin, said that his country won’t close or move the site of the ninth control point to another place, pointing out that these sites will continue its functions from the territory of its presence.

Turkey has repeatedly said earlier that a number of its 12 checkpoints in the Idlib region to reduce the escalation set up under the Astana agreements between Ankara, Moscow and Tehran have been repeatedly attacked by the Syrian army, amid clashes between government forces and militants.

Syrian government forces reportedly opened fire on a Turkish observation post in northwestern Syria, causing no casualties.

Turkey has set up 12 monitoring sites in northwestern Syria under an agreement with Russia and Iran.

Turkish presidential spokesman Ibrahim Kalin said on Wednesday that all Turkish observation posts would continue to operate and support would continue.
