Trump vows to appoint Elon Musk to head panel overseeing government spending if he became president
Donald Trump announced Thursday that he will appoint billionaire Elon Musk to oversee government spending and implement radical reforms if he wins the upcoming presidential election in November.
Trump said he would establish, at Musk’s suggestion, a government efficiency commission that would conduct a full review of the financial accounting and performance of the entire federal government.
Trump confirm that he would appoint Tesla’s CEO to head it.
Trump told the Economic Club of New York that the move could save “trillions and trillions of dollars”.
“This committee will develop an action plan to completely eliminate fraud and improper payments within six months,” he added.
Musk, who says he has voted for Democratic candidates in the past, has strongly supported Trump since a gunman tried to assassinate the former president during a campaign rally in July.
Musk is known for his run-ins with regulators, such as when the US Securities and Exchange Commission asked to scrutinize his posts on X after posts in 2018 that the agency deemed “false and misleading”.
Other Musk initiatives, such as his push to develop self-driving technology, are also under scrutiny from government agencies.
