Trump: US Navy fired on and seized an Iranian cargo ship in the Gulf of Oman
US President Donald Trump said Sunday that a US destroyer fired on and then seized an Iranian-flagged cargo ship in the Gulf of Oman, after it tried to break a US-imposed naval blockade.
Trump wrote on Truth Social that the Iranian-flagged cargo ship Tosca attempted to break our naval blockade.
He continued that the Iranian vessel ignored orders to stop, prompting the guided-missile destroyer to completely halt it by creating a hole in the engine room.
He added, “Currently, the vessel is under the control of the US Marines”.
He pointed out that Tosca is subject to sanctions imposed by the Treasury Department.
According to the latest data from the maritime tracking Marine Traffic website, the cargo ship Tosca, which sailed from Malaysia on April 12, was about 45 kilometers from the far southern coast of Iran, near the city of Chabahar, six hours before Trump’s announcement.
According to the latest tally published by the US military on Saturday morning, 23 ships have complied with US orders to turn back since the United States imposed a blockade on Iranian ports on April 13.
Tehran announced on Friday the opening of the Strait of Hormuz, through which a fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas production usually passes, after a temporary ceasefire agreement was reached between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon.
But Tehran closed the strait again after Trump insisted that the blockade on Iranian ports would remain in place until a final agreement was reached.
On Sunday morning, the US president accused Iran in a Truth Social post of violating the ceasefire, saying that Iranian shots targeted a “French ship” as well as a British cargo ship.
French shipping company CMA CGM said on Sunday that one of its vessels was shot at warning shots in the Strait of Hormuz on Saturday, adding that the crew was unharmed.
