Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump on Monday described the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympic Games as insulting and humiliating.

“I am very open-minded, but I think what they did was offensive,” he said in an interview with Fox News.

The controversial performance began with a scene of men, including women, gathered around a table, reminiscent of the Last Supper of Christ with his disciples.

The French Bishops’ Conference condemned scenes that mock and ridicule Christianity.

The show sparked strong criticism from far-right politicians on social networks, particularly in France and Italy.

Asked what kind of opening ceremony he would like to see at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, if he were president then, Trump said, “We won’t have a ‘last supper’ filmed like they did the other day”.

The artistic director of the Olympic opening ceremony, Thomas Joly, denied on Sunday that the show was inspired by the Last Supper.

“The intention was never to disparage any religious group,” organizing committee spokeswoman Anne DeKean said Sunday.

“If people were offended, we are truly sorry”.
