Kremlin spokesman: Europe shoots its feet by stopping Russian gas imports
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that the European Union is shooting its feet in its efforts to stop importing Russian liquefied natural gas, noting that Moscow can find alternative markets.
The Russian presidential spokesman explained in press statements on Friday that Moscow will continue to act in a way that serves its interests in the field of energy.
“If there are more attractive alternative markets for natural gas, liquefied gas, oil and its derivatives, attention will naturally be paid to them,” he added.
Peskov criticized the EU’s move to halt Russian gas imports, saying: “Europeans are shooting themselves at their feet, but also at the feet of their constituents”.
He pointed out that voters in Europe won’t continue to give their votes to these people (European officials).
In January, the European Union approved additional restrictions on the purchase of Russian hydrocarbons, including liquefied natural gas, from April 25 and a complete supply ban in 2027.
The EU considers the continued importation of energy from Russia to be a direct financing of Moscow’s ongoing war on Ukraine since 2022, undermining the bloc’s political and security standing.
Russian gas still accounts for about 13% of EU imports in 2025, worth more than 15 billion Euros a year, according to the EU Council.
Regarding the Ukrainian issue, Peskov said that Russia won’t participate in the negotiations scheduled for tomorrow this week between the United States and Ukraine.
