US President-elect Donald Trump announced his intention to issue a decree on Monday to postpone the ban on TikTok in the country.

In a post on Truth Social on Sunday, Trump called on American companies not to allow TikTok to continue operating in the dark.

He added, “On Monday, I will issue an executive order that will extend the time period for the ban to go into effect, so that we can reach an agreement that protects our national security”.

Trump, who is set to officially take office in the White House on Monday, said the executive order would also ensure that companies that support keeping TikTok banned wouldn’t be held legally liable.

He pointed out that the United States wants to obtain a 50% ownership stake in a joint venture for TikTok.

Trump explained that this step aims to keep the application in safe hands.

He stressed that “without US approval, there will be no TikTok”.

Trump added, “My first idea is to create a joint venture between the current owners or the new owners, where the United States has a 50% ownership stake in this joint venture, through any acquisition we choose”.

TikTok informed users in the United States late Saturday that its social media app would be temporarily unavailable starting Sunday, when a law banning the app in the country takes effect.

Earlier, Trump said he was considering giving the company an additional 90 days to comply with the law and avoid the ban.

On Friday, the US Supreme Court approved the implementation of the law that stipulates banning TikTok if it’s not sold to an American company.

“Congress determined that the transfer of ownership of TikTok was necessary to address concerns about its data collection and its relationship with a foreign entity that threatens national security,” the court explained.

Under the unanimously passed law, the app will be removed from Google and Apple platforms after it wasn’t sold until Sunday, and the app won’t be downloaded on phones and tablets after that date.
