The Times of Israel reported that Egypt deployed dozens of tanks and armored vehicles near the Rafah crossing on the border with the Gaza Strip.

The Israeli newspaper reported, citing a number of photos, that dozens of armored vehicles are stationed near the border, noting that the deployment of heavy equipment at the crossing is due to the fact that Egypt fears the influx of tens of thousands of refugees as a result of the war on the Gaza Strip.

The Times of Israel indicated that Egypt is restricted under the peace treaty it concluded with Israel in 1979 regarding the number of forces allowed to be stationed in the Sinai Peninsula, although Israel agreed in the past that Egypt violated these numbers to fight terrorism in the region.

The Rafah crossing is the only border crossing between Egypt and the Gaza Strip.

Since the start of the war on Gaza on October 7, work at the crossing has been halted for passenger traffic, and its work has been limited to bringing some humanitarian aid trucks into Gaza.

Earlier, the Associated Press, citing the Israeli Prime Minister’s Office, reported that the Israeli authorities acknowledged the existence of an intelligence plan to resettle 2.3 million residents of the Gaza Strip in Egypt in the Sinai Peninsula.
