The Wall Street Journal: Hamas is regrouping and rearming and Israel may sink into a protracted war of attrition
The Wall Street Journal reported that Hamas is regrouping and rearming, and suggested that the conflict could turn into a protracted war of attrition.
In a report, the Wall Street Journal pointed out that Hamas in Gaza launched, one of the largest rockets launches towards Israel in weeks, in reference to the Islamic Jihad’s Quds Brigades targeting settlements Kissufim, Third Eye, Nirim, Sufa, and Holit in the Gaza envelope, with concentrated rocket barrages.
This came in conjunction with the resistance clashing with the occupation army in the Shujaiya neighborhood in Gaza City, which it previously overrun, according to the Wall Street Journal.
According to the Wall Street Journal, “these attacks have reinforced the challenge Israel faces as it seeks to continue its war against militants in Gaza, who retain rocket and mortar launch capabilities after almost 9 months”.
“The IDF’s incursion into the Shujaiya neighborhood of Gaza City illustrates how difficult it is for Israel to achieve the goal of eliminating Hamas in the Strip” the Wall Street Journal said.
“The operation in Shujaiya is the most recent, in which Israeli forces were forced to return to the area from which they withdrew, because Hamas regrouped and reasserted its control,” the newspapers said.
The Israeli forces had returned to a number of areas they had invaded earlier in the Gaza Strip, including Jabaliya in the northern Gaza Strip, in addition to al Shifa Hospital, the largest hospital in the Gaza Strip.
Security analysts say Israel is at risk of sinking into a long-running conflict with Hamas, which has shown its viability, benefiting from some support from Gaza’s residents.
