The Wall Street Journal quoted a US military official as saying that US forces were planning to bomb an abandoned missile launch site belonging to an Iranian-linked group in Syria.

The official explained that the US military backed out of the operation after contacting the Syrian Ministry of Defense, which in turn dismantled the site.

The official noted that Syrian officials showed remarkable responsiveness and cooperation, emphasizing that this dialogue helped avoid potential random confrontations.

He added, “The Syrian Ministry of Defense’s move helped prevent a military strike that could have caused collateral damage”.

In a related development, US officers confirmed that the US military is playing a significant behind-the-scenes diplomatic role in Syria, noting its involvement in mediation between the Syrian government and Kurdish fighters.

According to the WSJ, this mediation aims to achieve stability and prevent the return of civil conflict in the country.

Meanwhile, Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein and his Syrian counterpart, Asaad al Sheibani, held a joint press conference in Baghdad.

Hussein emphasized that the threats facing Syrian and Iraqi societies are shared, calling for international cooperation to confront the terrorist organization ISIS.

For his part, the Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al Sheibani stated, “Syria and Iraq must stand side by side to prevent any interference in their internal affairs,” stressing that “Syria is serious about strengthening relations with Iraq”.

He added that the two countries must cooperate to reject any external interference that attempts to impose the will of foreign powers on them.
