On the growing competition between the United States and China for influence in the Western Hemisphere, Washington continues tightening the noose on Chinese activities in Latin America.

The outgoing Chilean President Gabriel Boric has announced that the United States is forcing his country to cancel a lucrative contract with China, ending a project to lay fiber optic cables along the Pacific Ocean floor.

The US President Donald Trump had earlier imposed sanctions on three Chilean officials linked to the project.

Over the past two decades, China’s relations with Latin America have deepened significantly.

China has become the main trading partner of major South American countries, such as Brazil, Chile and Peru.

Washington is watching with concern as China consolidates its influence in South America, while China has become the main trading partner for many Latin American countries, the United States remains the main partner of Mexico and Central America.

These two countries prioritize relations with the United States over others, while Brazil is strengthening its industrial ties with China, Argentina’s policies are more influenced by the Washington-leaning policies of Buenos Aires.

Beijing is aware that competition with the United States is increasing; Therefore, its working to create a digital “Silk Road” in the region.

Chinese e-commerce platforms, such as Temu, are rapidly taking over Latin American markets, solidifying the foundations for cashless payments.

However, Washington isn’t standing idly by, watching China’s progress in this part of the world that Americans have considered their own backyard.

Now, in the midst of a war in the Middle East, the struggle for influence between the United States and China is raging.
