The area east of the Euphrates is witnessing rapid security developments, as the Syria Democratic Forces (SDF) announced on Monday that they have lost security control over Shaddadi prison in the southern countryside of Hasakah, which houses thousands of detainees from the terrorist organization ISIS.

In an official statement, the SDF explained that the prison has been subjected to repeated attacks since this morning by factions affiliated with Damascus, noting that its fighters confronted these attempts before the facility got out of control.

The statement criticized the international coalition’s position, pointing out that the coalition’s military base is only two kilometers from the prison and yet did not intervene despite repeated appeals.

For its part, the Syrian Arab Army’s Operations Committee responded with a different narrative, blaming the SDF for the release of the organization’s members.

The commission confirmed that army units have already begun a large-scale combing operation in the city of Shaddadi and its surroundings to re-establish security and arrest the fugitives, in preparation for handing over the prison and security facilities to the Syrian Ministry of Interior.

These tensions on the ground coincide with the entry into force of the historic agreement signed by the Syrian transitional president, Ahmed al Sharaa, and the commander of the SDF, Mazloum Abdi.

The agreement aims to end the state of military and administrative division through essential clauses, including:

Military and Security Integration: Integrating SDF personnel into the structure of the Syrian Ministries of Defense and Interior on an individual basis.

Sovereignty over resources: Surrender all oil fields in Hasakeh and border crossings to the Syrian government.

Redeployment: The withdrawal of the SDF forces to the east of the Euphrates River, and the immediate handover of the governorates of Raqqa and Deir Ezzor to Damascus.

Local administration: The appointment of a new governor of Hasakah ensures local representation, and the formation of security forces in Ayn al Arab (Kobani) from the residents of the area affiliated to the Ministry of Interior.

Despite the structural changes, the agreement stipulated the Syrian state’s commitment to continue fighting terrorism as a member of the international coalition and in coordination with Washington, while integrating those responsible for ISIS camps and prisons into official state institutions.
