A US Department of Defense official told Reuters on Wednesday that there is no indication yet of an imminent withdrawal of US forces from Syria.

The issue of the presence of US forces in Syria has become a renewed focus of attention with the return of President Donald Trump to power.

US officials reported that the Pentagon has begun preparing plans for a possible withdrawal, should such orders be issued, but no policy decisions have yet been made regarding the situation in Syria.

In the same context, a US defense official confirmed on Tuesday that there are no indications of an imminent withdrawal of US forces.

He explained that General Michael Kurilla, commander of US Central Command, played a role in encouraging the Syria Democratic Forces to reach an agreement with the Syrian government, noting that this agreement is progressing.

He also explained that the US administration’s view is that the Syrian Democratic Forces may find it difficult to maintain their territory if they face pressure from both Türkiye and the new Syrian government.

It’s worth noting that US Department of Defense spokesman Patrick Ryder confirmed on December 19, 2024, that the number of US soldiers currently present in Syria is approximately 2,000, not 900 as previously announced.
