The Independent: Britain should stay out of the US-Iran conflict scene
The Independent newspaper addressed the escalation of tension between the United States and Iran in light of the broad US military moves in the region, and warned of the dangers of a slide into a new confrontation, calling on British Prime Minister Keir Starmer to keep the United Kingdom out of any possible military action.
The British newspaper noted in its editorial that US President Donald Trump is following an approach that combines military escalation and overt threats on the one hand, and engaging in a diplomatic path on the other.
After warning Iran’s leadership during the recent wave of protests that Washington was ready to act, he re-gave Tehran 10 to 15 days to conclude an agreement on its nuclear program, hinting that very bad things would happen if it failed.
Despite sending a US team to Geneva to negotiate a deal that could include Iran abandoning its nuclear ambitions and accepting limits on its ballistic missiles, the US military buildup in the region, including the deployment of two large aircraft carrier groups and a large naval and air force, has remained a reflection of an unprecedented level of pressure.
The editorial believes that this escalation on the ground may create momentum that makes resorting to force a politically attractive option, especially in light of the approach of the US midterm elections and Trump’s desire to maintain the image of firmness in front of his electoral base.
Any new military strike could ignite a wider regional conflict, if other parties such as Israel, Saudi Arabia or Iranian-backed groups are involved, as well as potentially provoking reactions from major powers such as Russia and China.
The Independent believes that such an escalation would undermine what remains of fragile stability in the Middle East and undermine any efforts to de-escalate, including those related to the Gaza Strip.
Britain is emerging as a traditional ally of Washington trying to exert influence, with reports suggesting that Starmer has so far refused to give the United States permission to use its military bases on British soil or in its overseas territories to launch strikes against Iran.
If this is true, as the Independent says, his position will be credited to him, because it reflects a commitment to international law and a desire to avoid being dragged into a war whose consequences could be far-reaching.
The Independent compared this position to previous positions in British history, citing the refusal of Harold Wilson’s government to participate in the Vietnam War, in exchange for the negative consequences of Tony Blair’s support for the invasion of Iraq.
Trump’s threat with negotiation policy seems contradictory and unnecessary, especially since he has previously asserted that a previous strike on Iran’s nuclear facilities has significantly weakened Tehran’s capabilities, meaning that resorting to all-out war isn’t an inevitable option.
In conclusion, the editorial called on London to maintain the independence of its decision, and to give precedence to the logic of calm and international legitimacy over the logic of military parade, in order to avoid repeating the mistakes of the past in a region that does not tolerate further conflicts.
