The European Union on Tuesday included the head of the political bureau of Hamas in the Gaza Strip, Yahya Sinwar, on the terrorist list in light of the attack launched by the movement on southern Israel on October 7.

Accordingly, any assets that Sinwar may own in the 27 countries of the continental bloc are frozen, and citizens of European countries are prohibited from conducting any transactions with him.

The European Council explained, “This decision falls within the framework of the European Union’s response to the threat posed by Hamas and its brutal and indiscriminate terrorist attacks on Israel on October 7”.

Sinwar, (61), is considered the architect of these attacks and has not appeared in public since October.

Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz said that the European Union’s decision is the result of “our diplomatic efforts to dry up Hamas’ resources, delegitimize it, and deprive it of any support… We’ll continue to eradicate the roots of evil in Gaza and wherever it rears its head”.

In December, the European Union included two officials in the military wing of the Hamas movement, the commander of the al Qassam Brigades, Muhammad al Deif and his deputy, Marwan Issa, on the terrorism list, which imposes sanctions on organizations or individuals involved in terrorist acts.

The Union had previously classified Hamas as a terrorist organization.

Several countries consider the movement a terrorist organization, including the United States, Canada, and Israel.
