The Chip war between the United States and China!
The United States continues its efforts to limit the progress of the Chinese chip industry, as the administration of President Joe Biden announced new measures at the beginning of 2024.
These measures focus on preventing China from developing its old chip industry, as part of a strategy of which the chip war is part of.
The conflict between the United States and China is intensifying in the field of chip manufacturing, which is key to future technology.
In October 2022, the United States imposed strict controls limiting the export of ultra-advanced chips to Chinese companies, and continued in this context with a new decision in October 2023 preventing the arrival of relatively old US chips to China.
While events witnessed an additional development when the Dutch company ASML announced at the beginning of 2024 that the Dutch government had reduced its license to export deep lithography (DUV) machines, used in the production of less advanced chips, to China.
ASML said it had obtained additional clarification on the effects of the restrictions issued in October 2023, which it revealed impose restrictions on some mid-range chip production machines.
This indicates a US desire to control China’s progress in the chip industry.
These new US steps show a circumvention of the idea of flooding the markets with cheap chips from China, as the numbers show that China didn’t supply the markets with large quantities of chips at low prices.
This US campaign is considered a long-term war, aiming to prevent China from making progress in the field of electronic chip manufacturing technology.
Some wonder the reason behind this step, and some indicate that it comes within a US strategy to control innovation and technological progress, especially with regard to military and space uses.
It should be noted that Taiwan and South Korea control more than 75% of global chip production, and although the United States ranks third in its share, it seeks to ensure that China does not advance in this field.
