China announced that the remnants of its “Long March 5B” missile landed in the Indian Ocean, on Sunday, and that most of its components were destroyed upon entering the Earth’s atmosphere.

China’s Manned Space Engineering Bureau said parts of the missile entered the atmosphere at 10:24 am Beijing time (02:24 GMT) and landed at a location at 72.47 degrees’ east longitude and 2.65 north latitude.

The coordinates place the point of impact in the Indian Ocean in southwestern India and Sri Lanka.

The bureau confirmed that most of the debris was burned into the atmosphere.

The “Long March 5B” missile was launched from the Chinese island of Hainan on April 29, carrying the “Tianhe” unmanned vehicle, which was carrying what would become the living quarters of an orbiting Chinese space station.

The second stage of the missile out of control sparked speculation that lasted for days about the location of the debris fall, and northern Sudan was mentioned among the possible sites of fall, in addition to a number of Arab countries.

Last year, parts of the first “Long March 5B” missile fell in Ivory Coast and damaged some buildings, but there were no reports of injuries.
