The African Summit calls in its final statement to stop all forms of cooperation with Israel
The final statement of the 38th African Summit, which concluded in Addis Ababa, called on the member countries of the African Union to stop all forms of cooperation with Israeli, and expressed its support for Palestine obtaining full membership in the United Nations.
The final statement stressed the African Union’s firm support for the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination, and called for the immediate release of all prisoners in Israeli occupation prisons, and the final withdrawal from the territories occupied since 1967.
The African summit strongly condemned the barbaric Israeli aggression on the Gaza Strip, calling on the international community to intervene urgently to stop the humanitarian catastrophe facing the Palestinian people, and to lift the siege imposed on the Strip immediately.
African leaders participating in the summit accused Israel of committing genocide against the Palestinians, and called for it to be held internationally accountable for its violations of international law, including targeting civilians and infrastructure.
The African summit was held over two days, during which the rotating presidency of the African Union was transferred from Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Ghazouani to Angolan President João Lourenço.
It also witnessed the election of Djiboutian Mahmoud Ali Youssouf as Chairman of the African Commission, succeeding Chadian diplomat Moussa Faki Mahamat.
The summit discussed several issues and files, including the escalation of fighting in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, the ongoing war in Sudan, and the African Union’s agenda for 2063 and the African Continental Free Trade Area.
