Syrian transitional President Ahmed al Sharaa warned in New York on Tuesday of the risk of new unrest in the Middle East if his country and Israel don’t reach a security agreement.

During a dialogue session organized in New York by the American think tank, the Middle East Institute, Sharaa said, “We’re not the ones causing problems for Israel… We fear Israel, not the other way around”.

He added, “There are multiple risks associated with the fact that Israel is delaying negotiations and continuing to violate our airspace and penetrate our territory”.

Sharaa refused to engage in any discussion about dividing his country, while Israel continues its incursions into southern Syria, where it claims to be defending the interests of the Druze minority.

The transitional Syrian president said, “Jordan is under pressure, and any talk of dividing Syria will harm Iraq and Türkiye”.

He added, “This will take us all back to square one,” noting that his country had just emerged from a civil war that lasted a decade and a half.

Syria and Israel are still officially at war, but following the fall of the Assad regime, the two countries began direct negotiations, including bilateral meetings at the ministerial level.

On Monday, Sharaa ruled out any Syrian recognition of Israel at the present time.
