Syrian presidential elections: Ballot boxes are closed in Syria and counting votes started
The Supreme Judicial Committee for Elections in Syria announced that no legal breach was recorded, with the closing of the ballot boxes in the presidential elections and the start of counting the votes.
The committee thanked the Syrian people “for their commitment to the constitution and the law while performing their duty and right to vote”.
It also thanked the judicial subcommittees and the election committees “for their full commitment to the law and for the smooth conduct of the electoral process,” according to Syrian SANA news agency, who quoted from the committee.
The committee had announced the extension of the voting period by five hours, as it was scheduled to end at seven in the evening on Wednesday, and spoke of a high turnout for voting.
Two candidates participated in the elections, besides the incumbent President Bashar al Assad, who is widely expected to win a fourth seven-year term, the last for him unless the constitution is changed or amended.
