Syria: Ahmed al Sharaa appointed as president of the transitional phase
The spokesman for the Military Operations Department, Hassan Abdul Ghani, announced on Wednesday evening the appointment of Ahmed al Sharaa as president of the transitional phase in Syria.
The announcement came during a special conference to announce the victory of the Syrian revolution, which was attended by a number of factions of the Military Operations Administration and the forces of the Syrian revolution.
Abdul Ghani said in his speech, “We announce that Commander Ahmed al Sharaa will assume the presidency of the country in the transitional phase,” noting that al Sharaa will carry out the duties of the presidency of the republic and represent it in international forums.
He added that it was decided to cancel the 2012 constitution and exceptional emergency laws, in addition to dissolving the Syrian People’s Assembly and all its committees.
Abdul Ghani announce that the 8th of December will be declared a national day.
Abdul Ghani continued, saying, “We announce the dissolution of all security agencies affiliated with the former regime and the dissolution of all militias established by the deposed regime, with the rebuilding of the army on national foundations”.
Abdul Ghani confirmed that Ahmed al Sharaa will be authorized to form an interim legislative council for the transitional period, to work until a permanent constitution is approved and comes into effect.
He explained that all revolutionary and civil military and political factions will be dissolved and integrated into state institutions.
It was also decided to dissolve the Arab Socialist Baath Party, the National Progressive Front parties and their affiliated organizations.
For his part, Ahmed al Sharaa spoke at the conference, saying, “What Syria needs today more than ever is the determination to build and develop it, just as we were determined in the past to liberate it”.
He added, “The current stage requires filling the power vacuum and preserving civil peace, as well as building state institutions, strengthening the economic development infrastructure, and restoring Syria’s international and regional status”.
In a related context, the Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al Sheibani said, “We’ve succeeded in forming a Syrian identity that reflects the aspirations of our people and establishes a state based on freedom, justice and dignity, where everyone feels love for the homeland and belonging”.
The Syrian Foreign Minister pointed out that Syria is pursuing a balanced foreign policy that aims to reassure the international community, gain friends, and clarify its vision abroad.
He also stressed that the primary goal of its foreign policy is to contribute to building a regional and international environment based on cooperation and mutual respect.
Al Shaibani added, “Syria continues to strengthen its relations with neighboring Arab countries and seeks to enhance its regional and international presence through new strategic partnerships”.
