Sweden fears to be the next US target after Greenland
Sweden’s deputy prime minister and minister of energy and industry, Ebba Busch, has warned that Sweden could become a strategic target for the United States after Greenland, as a result of its increasingly important mineral wealth.
Speaking about the need to develop the mining sector, Busch noted that mineral resources could attract the attention of US President Donald Trump, considering that this could put Sweden among the priorities of US policy after Greenland.
Busch stressed that its essential for Sweden to retain its sovereign decision to manage its natural resources, saying, “We must be the ones who determine how we use our resources… I want Sweden to be a country that is difficult to control, and for leaders like Donald Trump to face greater obstacles in trying to exert their influence over it”.
She explained that minerals and rare earth elements are a key pillar in modern technological industries, pointing out that Swedish territory contains seven out of seventeen rare earth elements that are of strategic importance globally.
The deputy prime minister also revealed a government move to launch a bolder strategy in the mining sector, focusing on strengthening supply chain security and strengthening Sweden’s independence in this area.
“We need to adopt a sharper mindset, especially in light of the international policies that we are witnessing that are characterized by the imposition of influence and control over resources”.
Swedish Defense Minister Paul Johnson said on Monday that the Trump administration’s positions on Greenland are causing concern and uncertainty within NATO, as they have repercussions on balances within the alliance.
