Steve Witkoff: We expect to reach a peace agreement between Morocco and Algeria within 60 days
US President Donald Trump’s envoy to the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, said his team is working to finalize an agreement between Morocco and Algeria, expecting a peace agreement to be reached within 60 days between the two neighboring countries, whose relations have been strained for decades.
During an interview with President Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, on 60 Minutes, Witkoff explained that the search for peace has spread like a contagion, and people are seeking peace in different regions.
There have been no official responses from either Morocco or Algeria to the US envoy’s statement, which comes just days after Massad Boulos, US presidential advisor for Africa, the Arab world, and the Middle East, declared Washington’s support for Morocco’s autonomy proposal as a solution to the Western Sahara issue.
Prior to that, Massad Boulos had visited Algeria in late July, and at the conclusion of his visit, where he met with President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, he affirmed Washington’s determination to strengthen relations with Algeria and elevate them to new heights.
These developments come as the border between Morocco and Algeria has remained closed since 1994, due to disputes, most notably the issue of Western Sahara, disputed between Morocco and the Polisario, which is supported by Algeria.
