Serbia to build natural gas power plant with the support of Azerbaijan
Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic announced that his country, with the support of Azerbaijan, will build a natural gas-fired power plant in the city of Niš.
This came during a joint press conference with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, who paid an official visit to the Serbian capital Belgrade on Sunday.
Vucic noted that his country has excellent relations with Azerbaijan.
He said a natural gas-fired power plant would be built near the southern Serbian city of Niš, with Azerbaijan’s support.
“We’ll start the first phase with an installed capacity of 500 megawatts… Aliyev has said he will personally be involved in the project”.
“You may not believe it, but Azerbaijan built a 1,890-megawatt natural gas plant in just two years,” he said.
“The plant project could be a starting point for what Serbia should do in the future,” he said.
“We should consider building more natural gas plants, even small nuclear plants, data centers, and more”.
Vucic said he believes the natural gas plant could enter service in 2029.
He also confirmed that he and Aliyev discussed cooperation in defense industries between the two countries as well, noting that Azerbaijan always stands by Serbia.
Aliyev’s visit to Serbia witnessed the signing of 6 cooperation agreements in the fields of food security, economy, communications, culture, sports, and health.
