Secretary of State announces the start of the process of withdrawal of US troops from Syria, a US committee headed by US national security adviser John Bolton will visit Turkey to coordinate the withdrawal process
US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo confirmed that US forces have already begun to leave Syrian territory, according to American media.
“President Donald Trump doesn’t act vaguely about Syria”, Pompeo said.
“Our forces are leaving this Arab republic”.
The Pentagon announced at the end of last year that the US military planned to leave Syria is still continuing their operations against the remnants of ISIS there.
A spokeswoman for the Pentagon declined to comment on media reports that the first batch of US troops left Syrian territory on Dec. 28, saying: “We have no intention of talking about the details of operations”.
The US president announced on December 19, his decision to start withdrawing US troops from Syria, arguing that the United States “has defeated ISIS” in this country, and that the fight against terrorism was the sole purpose of the presence of his troops there.
Meanwhile, US national security adviser John Bolton announced that he would visit Turkey with Special Envoy to Syria James Jeffrey and Chief of Staff Joseph Danford to coordinate the withdrawal of his troops from Syrian territory, Bolton tweeted about his visit to Turkey.
“We’re going to discuss ways to cooperate with our allies on the withdrawal of US troops from Syria, to prevent the emergence of a new supporter, to protect the positions of those who fought against us against the organization, and to combat the malicious Iranian activities in the region”, Bolton said.
Bolton had announced a few days ago that he would visit Turkey in January.
The announcement came after a telephone call by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and American Donald Trump, in which they discussed the Syrian issue.
Trump called the “fruitful”, noting that he discussed with President Erdogan, the fight against ISIS and “highly coordinated withdrawal” of US forces from Syria.
“Erdogan has provided me with ample information about his country’s ability to eliminate the remnants of ISIS in Syria, which they are able to do so.
Turkey is also a neighbor of Syria, and our soldiers are returning home”, Trump tweeted.
Trump had chirped earlier this week in which he said in response to critics of his decision to withdraw from Syria, saying that the United States had lost Syria for a long time, no doubt that nothing in Syria except sand and death.
The US intervention in Syrian war started in September 2014, by launching air strikes against ISIS, then Washington began using the forces of Syria Democratic Forces, a group that combine in majority of Kurdish groups such as PYD/PKK which are classified as terrorist groups according to Turkey, Washington used them as on ground force and offered them support to fight the so called Islamic State in northern and eastern part of Syria.
