Russia’s central bank files lawsuit against EU over the frozen assets
Russia’s central bank announced on Tuesday that it has filed a lawsuit against the European Union at the European Court of Justice over the frozen assets.
“The European Union’s decision to freeze Russian assets indefinitely violates international treaties and the principle of inviolability,” Russia’s central bank said in a statement.
“Therefore, a lawsuit has been filed against the European Union before the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg,” the statement added.
The statement said that the controversial EU resolution was adopted by a majority of votes, not unanimously by member states, noting that this was a procedural violation.
On December 12, EU member states agreed to extend the freeze of some €210 billion ($246 billion) of Russian sovereign assets held in the bloc since the war in Ukraine started in February 2022.
