Russia adds individuals and companies to its sanctions list on Ukraine

Russia on Tuesday added 245 people and companies to its list of economic sanctions against Ukraine amid renewed tension between the two countries.
Under a decree signed by Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev, 245 individuals and seven companies were added to a blacklist published early in November, particularly in the energy and defense sectors.
Thus, the Russian economic sanctions affect 567 people and 75 Ukrainian companies.
Medvedev confirmed via Twitter that the new measures were taken “in defense of the interests of the government, companies and citizens of Russia”.
Relations between Moscow and Kiev have been deteriorating since 2014, and the end of November has been renewed after the Russian Coast Guard detained three Ukrainian military vessels off the Crimean peninsula.
New Russian sanctions on Tuesday include companies in the defense and energy sectors as well as an insurance company.
Among the targeted people is the mayor of Odessa (south) and senior Ukrainian officials.
Since the outbreak of the conflict in Ukraine, Kiev has taken measures to limit its economic and trade ties with Russia, having been a key partner since the collapse of the Soviet Union.
The first blacklist included the eldest son of Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko, as well as former prime ministers Arseniy Yatsenyuk and Yulia Timoshenko, who will run against Poroshenko in next year’s presidential election.
The conflict in eastern Ukraine with separatists loyal to Moscow has killed more than 10,000 people since 2014.
