A poll conducted in Germany showed that nearly half of Germans support banning the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party.

According to a poll conducted by the INSA Institute for the weekly Welt am Sonntag newspaper, 48% of respondents expressed support for banning the Alternative for Germany party.

The survey, conducted on May 2 and 3, surveyed 1,001 people, with 37% rejecting the idea of a ban, while 15% expressed hesitation or undecided.

The survey also revealed that 61% of Germans consider the Alternative for Germany party a “far-right party”.

Last Friday, the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution classified the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party as a far-right party in the country, following a three-year investigation.

“The understanding of people based on race and origin, which prevails within the party, is incompatible with the free democratic system,” the domestic intelligence agency said in a statement.

The Alternative for Germany party won 20.8% of the vote in the early general elections held on February 23, placing it second behind the Christian Union coalition.

It should be noted that the German Constitutional Court can only rule on whether a party conflicts with the constitution upon a request from the German government, the Federal Parliament, or the Federal Council of States, however, none of these institutions has yet submitted such a request.
