Politis: The phenomenon of Israelis buying land on the island is on the rise
Politis, the leading newspaper in Greek Cyprus, published a report revealing the increasing number of Israeli land purchases on the island.
The newspaper published its report under the title, “As if it were another promised land… Why are Jews buying land in Cyprus?”
The report highlighted the Israelis who purchased homes and land in the Roman sector, who flocked to it after the recent war with Iran.
The report indicated that the number of Israelis reached 15,000 people, and noted the activity of the Jewish Chabad movement in the region.
The newspaper reported that the Israeli immigrants are close to establishing a city, and the report stated that the Israelis have used Greek Cyprus as a backyard during the Covid-19 pandemic.
According to the report, the Chabad movement owns six homes, a synagogue, a kindergarten, a mikvah (Jewish bath), a kashrut center (a Jewish body that grants kosher certification), a cemetery, and summer activity facilities.
Chabad is an extremist organization that doesn’t believe in the existence of Palestinians, calls for their expulsion from occupied Palestine, and opposes any agreement that would grant them part of the land.
The organization’s members are present in several countries, including the United States, France, and Canada, in addition to the UAE, where they established a Jewish community center containing a synagogue and Torah scrolls.
On the other hand, Stefanos Stefanou, Secretary General of the far-left AKEL party, the largest opposition party in Greek Cyprus, said during a speech at his party’s general conference that Israelis are purchasing land in his country without supervision, saying, “Our country is being taken from us… Israel is occupying us”.
In his speech, Stefano warned, “A great danger is coming… Our country is being lost”.
He noted that Israelis are purchasing real estate in sensitive areas that threaten national security.
He added, “We’re observing the development of a phenomenon whereby Israelis are creating ghettos by establishing Zionist schools and synagogues… We are also seeing Israelis purchasing important economic centers and vast tracts of land in Cyprus in an organized manner”.
In AKEL’s social media posts on the occasion of the party conference, phrases such as “New Israel” and “The new state occupied by Israel” were prominent.
